Low Light and Relaxation: Yes Please!

February 28th, 2012 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits

I had the pleasure of doing a trade with a dear friend who is an Ayurvedic practitioner and massage therapist. I photographed her in her studio as she worked on a few clients and in return she gave me two hours of bodywork. My session was a blend of deep tissue and Thai massage. Thai massage is one of my favorite treats ever because it allows your entire body to be stretched and stretched as you are being massaged. This was two of the most relaxing hours of my life so if you live in the Boston area and are looking for a bit of rejuvenation at the end of winter, check out Samadhi in Newton and book an appointment with Natalie. Your body will thank you.

Inspiring Fitness

January 26th, 2012 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits

As it goes, a lot of us eat whatever we want during the holidays and vow to get fit in the new year. I have the hardest time motivating to get to the gym (I wish it were my scene, but it’s just not) so I have been trying to do workout videos and yoga at home. And I am really, really trying not to eat so much chocolate.

Keyword: trying.

Sigh.

Sharing a few photos from a fitness photo session this Fall. T is a total inspiration– she’s healthy and fit and more importantly has boundless energy and feels great. I hope these images are as inspiring to you as they are to me.

T, congratulations on taking it to the next level. You are a rockin’ rock!

On Making a Modern Photo Album

January 25th, 2012 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits, Products

This Winter I am ramping up my selection of studio sample albums. I have (finally!) narrowed down six amazing albums from various vendors in a range of sizes and prices that are sure to delight. More to come on each album, but today I’m sharing a sample layout I created from a recent family portrait session in Auburn, NH.

I favor album layouts that are either symmetrical or asymmetrical but they always have to be full bleed (image printed so it runs off the page) or on white. The photos should speak for themselves so I stay away from overly designed pages that include text, doodles, or layered images with borders. I want my album pages to be clean and modern looking and more importantly, to stand the test of time. The white background allows the photos to breathe in the same way a white gallery allows its artworks to breathe. (The gray border here is only to add separation between layout pages.)

Photographs age like fine wine you know, so it’s only right they are preserved with care.

Violet Marsh Gets Published

December 20th, 2011 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Inspiration, Portraits

It’s always a treat to finish up the year with fun news. I opened my mail box yesterday and was delighted to find copies of the most recent Woman Inc Magazine with my photos published. Woman Inc is based in Minnesota and highlights notable women entrepreneurs throughout the country.  A while back I featured Apotheca Flower Shoppe on Apartment Therapy since it is such a rare, creative gem especially in these parts. With that, the magazine asked me to photograph the owner, Alyssa, to feature in their publication.

And here it is, live! Congratulations to you Alyssa- you have an amazing aesthetic and fabulous shop. I wish you all the success in the world.

Holiday Cards Are Rolling In!

December 20th, 2011 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits, Products

As you know, I put together a mini portrait session for families recently at a studio downtown. I just received the first holiday card from this adorable family from that session! (Here’s an admission: I designed this card and had them printed, so I knew exactly what to expect.) You can’t tell from this picture, but the cards are printed on thick postcard stock with an elegant pearl finish which is perfect for the sparkly season that is the holidays. Happiest of holidays to the Shaheen Family and yours.

And check out this cutie that came in the mail. We did a Fall portrait session earlier this year decked out in striped tights and a Missoni jacket designed for Target, which I hear was all the rage among mommies.  I did not design this one, but it is a testament to how professional photos make everything better if I do say so myself. Merry Christmas to the Bakers!

And last but not least, a one-sided photo card made by Shutterfly from mom and daughter dynamic duo, Chloe and Meredith!

Downtown Manchester Holiday Portrait Peek

November 15th, 2011 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits, Studio

This past weekend I had my first ever mini holiday portrait session and it was so much fun! First off, the kids were dressed impeccably. (Thank you moms and dads! I aspire to be as stylish.) Secondly, I got to set up shop in a gorgeous studio in downtown Manchester which had plenty of natural light. (I usually shoot out of my smaller home studio or on-location, so this was quite a treat.) We had a ball tossing around over-sized plastic ornaments, playing with colorful lights, and running around wearing angel halos.

I set up a few colorful holiday scenes but also a crisp white backdrop so the children could move around more freely. A serene white backdrop is such a beautiful thing. It really showcases children, or any subject, in a clean, ‘this is me’ way.

Thank you to all the families who made this possible. I hope to make the mini holiday portrait session an annual tradition.

I know it’s early but…Happy Holidays!

Baby Ione’s Fall Portrait

November 8th, 2011 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits

Ione (i-own-ee) is very reserved with people she doesn’t know well but with the help of mom and dad she warmed right up. She did me a favor by sitting on the yellow velvet chair for a few minutes and then interacted with it in her own (even cuter) way by sticking her head through the back.

Ione, you are sweet and oh so stylish. Alyssa and Peter, congratulations on your beautiful little sprite.

Newborn Sweetness

November 4th, 2011 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits

Rosie was just under 3 months when I took these photos of her and even though she is so teeny tiny, she has a huge personality. She made a lot of eye contact with the camera and already seems to be very aware and engaged in her surroundings.

Rosie, I love your name and your sweet face! Congratulations to you Alex and Cristy! What a treasure.

Fielding a Photoshoot in Bedford

September 27th, 2011 by Tanya | Comments Off | Filed in Portraits

Since most kids have a ton of energy, it’s a lot of fun to capture them unleashing a bit of it in a wide open field. When Kara called to schedule this portrait session, I had just the spot! A tree-lined, hilly park in Bedford where the children could run and play. Wyatt, Adelyn, and I ran all around, rolled down the hills, picked some berries, and they even sat together and hugged each other for a few moments. I hope you agree that these photos capture their essence. Oh, to be young. It is so sweet.
