Interior Design Tips: Materials for a Modern Home

Violet Marsh Interiors specializes in modern, functional interior design in Atlanta and throughout the East Coast. I believe in creating beautiful, impeccably finished spaces that define our client’s design style and personality. To achieve this, I seek out specific and unique design elements - lighting, paint, flooring, furniture, and art - to create a space that you not only love, but also feel completely at home in. When it comes to designing a modern home, there are a few tried and true materials I turn to to for clean lines, brilliant function, and beauty. If you’re looking to infuse your home with modern elements, check out my five favorite “Materials for a Modern Home” below.

Natural Wood

Natural wood has been used for centuries and is here to stay. In fact, it’s currently experiencing a comeback as people are embracing cozier spaces. When it comes to natural wood, it’s all about the finish, tone, and texture. There are a variety of species- oak, walnut, pine - the list goes on - each one can help add softness and natural beauty to furniture, floors, ceilings, and walls.

Quartzite

Quartzite is natural stone that is almost as durable as granite, but comes in light and airy colors with gorgeous veining. It can be very earthy feeling when honed and is always sophisticated. This particular “modern material” can be used as a countertop, in showers, and on windowsills.

Brass or Polished Nickel

Real brass and nickel are always my choice for lighting, plumbing, and door knobs. Brass is dense, you can feel the quality, and it wears well over time. Polished nickel is shiny, smooth, and also has a lengthy lifespan.

Wool or Velvet

Give me all the wool and velvet! These materials will never go out of style - and they are great for achieving a modern, luxurious look. The nature of wool and velvet make the colors even more rich and both are available in an array of textures.

Glass

If I had to choose one material that epitomizes modernity, it’s glass. Bigger windows without mullions, shower glass partitions, glass doors. Let the sunshine in! Letting in the natural light is the best design decision you can make.

And there you have it - my go-to materials for creating a modern, clean, and functional home. Are you interested in working together to transform your space into a place of sophistication and luxury?
